Our Mission

Our Mission

Empowering Women and Girls. Strengthening Our Community.

Soroptimist of Stuart is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in Martin County and beyond through education, partnership, and service — while contributing to a global movement for economic empowerment.

We are working to help fulfill our organization’s Big Goal: to invest in the dreams of half a million women and girls through access to education and become self-sufficient by 2031!

Our Local Commitment

We are committed to strengthening lives across Martin County and beyond by building lasting friendships, serving our neighbors, and investing our time, talents, and resources where they are needed most.

Through local partnerships and hands-on service, we support women and families in our own communities — helping create safer, healthier, and more resilient futures close to home.

Education

Why Education Matters

Soroptimist prioritizes education because it delivers powerful, real-world impact. Educated women and girls are less vulnerable to trafficking, better able to leave and not return to domestic violence situations, more likely to access healthcare, and more capable of achieving economic stability.

When women succeed, families grow stronger — and entire communities benefit.
Through meaningful local action, Soroptimist of Stuart advances the organization’s Global Vision 2031: providing access to education for 500,000 women and girls worldwide so they can achieve economic empowerment and self-sufficiency.

Our History

Founded in November 1954, Soroptimist of Stuart began with 20 charter members meeting at the Stuart Hotel just south of the Roosevelt Bridge. Rooted in fellowship and service, the club quickly established a reputation for meaningful community leadership.

In 1955, members led efforts to save the historic Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge, helping establish it as a museum and prompting the formation of the Martin County Historical Society. Over the decades, the club expanded its philanthropic reach, supporting organizations such as SafeSpace, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys & Girls Club, Molly’s House, and many other local initiatives.

In 1999, the club assumed leadership of the Women of Distinction event and guided it through 2020. During that time, it generated meaningful impact through increased funding and strengthened community support, leaving an enduring legacy of service and care.

Present Impact

Continuing the Legacy

Today, Soroptimist of Stuart continues its work through award programs such as Live Your Dream, Youth Service Awards, and Women in Transition, along with community projects including Dream It, Be It and International Relations initiatives.

While our methods evolve, our mission remains the same: empower women and girls through education, lead with integrity, and create opportunity where it is needed most.
